How is it calculated?
Start: for goods, receipt (several items delivered separately: the last; partial deliveries: the last; regular delivery: the first); for services and digital content without a physical medium, the contract (§ 356 Abs. 2, § 355 Abs. 2 BGB).
The period does not start before correct information on the right of withdrawal (§ 356 Abs. 3 BGB).
14 days: the day of the event does not count; the period ends when the 14th day ends (§ 187 Abs. 1, § 188 Abs. 1 BGB).
Without correct information: at the latest twelve months and 14 days after the start under § 356 Abs. 2 BGB (§ 356 Abs. 4 BGB). The count follows Art. 10(1) of Directive 2011/83/EU: first the 14 days, then twelve months (§ 188 Abs. 2 and 3 BGB).
If the last day falls on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the next working day applies (§ 193 BGB). The EU Consumer Rights Directive applies the time‑limits Regulation 1182/71 for this (recital 41; Art. 3(4) of the Regulation). The nine nationwide public holidays in Germany are included.
Refund: at the latest 14 days after the withdrawal arrives (§ 357 Abs. 1 BGB), with the same move to the next working day.

Good to know
- Not calculated: some contracts have no right of withdrawal, e.g. goods made to the customer’s specifications, quickly perishable goods, unsealed hygiene products or unsealed audio, video and software media (§ 312g Abs. 2 BGB).
- Not calculated: for services and digital content, the right of withdrawal can end earlier (§ 356 Abs. 5 and 6 BGB).
